to determine the age of an archaeological artifact, so that the researchers concerned have a better idea of what happened when and where.
but seriously now though. it is, i think, somewhat like a preview or trial period so that you can decide if the partner is really the one you want to marry. learn more, stuff like that, and, vague antropomorphic entity willing, decide.

It’s so you can confirm whether or not u want to advance to the romantic, altruistic and then filial love with that person.
Become a priest Xin-san. You’d be saving your offspring.

Yes, why the cynic is correct. Originally, dating is a social way of meeting a girl that you would like to marry someday. Seems strange, doesn’t it? Especially when the next step is really just going to a movie or something. It’s an ordinance we’ve all been accustomed to, but, well, there you go.

    Dating’s fun.
Is there a point to fun?
    Or another perspective.
Just marry that girl on the street then, without dating.

does there have to be a point? Can’t you date to meet new people or to have fun?

The majority of teenagers date because of their starvation for the image of maturity. Dating, drinking, having sex is all part of the endeavour to seem glamorous and adult. It is for this reason that the majority of teenagers are retarded. It’s fine to pretend to be an adult now, but you won’t be able to pretend to be a teenager when you’re old. The grass is always bloody greener.
However, there’s nothing really wrong with dating, in my opinion. Two people trying to find out more about each other is beneficial. Plus its always important to get a sense of context and society, and dating is another medium for this. Don’t forget that dating is not all about sex and idealistic futures- all of that is artificial at this stage, forget about it. The true value of it is meeting new people, learning skills about liaising with other people which will be indispensible in the adult world.
Of course, I’m not saying that dating is the only way to gain a sense of social perspective, but it definitely provides an insight. I’m also not saying that I’m a prolific dater, because I’m not at all, in fact. Furthermore, if you don’t think dating’s for you, then there’s nothing wrong with ‘abstaining’ (haw haw). However, these experiences serve only to improve, and the best thing you can do is make decisions that you’re most comfortable with.
